Can't I just use a conventional kitchen sponge to replace an aquarium filter sponge?

Question by The One: Can't I just use a conventional kitchen sponge to replace an aquarium filter sponge? My aquarium filter sponge need replacing. I'm quite not keen to spend to buy the proper one. Can I just use a new kitchen sponge that has about same porosity as the old aquarium sponge? Best answer:
