What the different Between a regular fish tank filter Vs a Canister filter?

Question by DKL203: What the different Between a regular fish tank filter Vs a Canister filter? I have a 55 gall and i have about 10 to 15 fish and some live plant. I'm thinking of getting a Hagen Fluval 404 Cannister Filter Freshwater Saltwater but what is so good about this vs a regular fliter. Best answer:

Cannister filters just move all the clutter out of the tank, apart from the pickup and return hoses. Because everything is external you can have a bigger 'cannister' with more or bigger
